Two in five wage and salary workers are women (Results from the October 2013 Labor Force Survey)

There were approximately 38.5 million employed persons in the country in October 2013. Of the total employed, 57.6 percent or 22.2 million were wage and salary workers. Of this number, 8.3 million or 37.5 percent were women while 13.9 million or 62.5 percent were men (Table 1). These findings are based on the October 2013 Labor Force Survey. Wage and salary workers refer to those who work with pay in private households, private establishments, government and government-controlled corporations and those who work with pay in their own family-operated farm or business.

Approximately 7.0 million of the 38.5 employed population in the country are considered underemployed, based on the October 2013 Labor Force Survey (LFS). The underemployment rate in October 2013 was consequently estimated at 18.1 percent. Of the total number of underemployed persons, 2.1 million or 30.4 percent were women while 4.8 million or 69.6 percent were men (Table 1). Underemployed persons refer to employed persons who express the desire to have additional hours of work in their present job or to have additional job, or to have a new job with longer working hours.

Four in Seven Unpaid Family Workers are Women (Results from the October 2013 Labor Force Survey)

Approximately 4.2 million of the 38.5 million employed persons in the country are unpaid family workers, based on the October 2013 Labor Force Survey. Unpaid family workers refer to family members who work without pay in a farm or business operated by the family. Among the unpaid family workers, 2.4 million or four in seven (58%) were women.
